The Van de Graaff Generator is best known as "the thing that makes your hair stand up." The "thing" looks like a big, aluminum ball mounted on a pedestal.
Students are attracted to the generator because of its affect when used, but through literal, hands-on experience, students can learn about static electricity. As students learn about static electricity, they learn about atoms, the atomic nucleus, electrons, neutrons and protons. The history of the Van de Graaff Generator can also be incorporated into the generator lesson if requested.
The generator and corresponding lesson can be brought to any classroom. For more information about the program or to schedule a presentation in your school, contact our communications coordinator at 334.288.1163, 334.738.2500 or 1.888.349.4332.
