Cooperative Board Approves Payment of Capital Credits

November 2004

Dixie Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit business that exists solely to provide our members with electricity. Because you are an owner of the company, you are entitled to a portion of the net margins made by the cooperative. These margins are allocated to you in the form of a capital credit.
Member-owners are allocated capital credits based on the amount of the bills they paid in each specific year. This means that everyone’s capital credit allocation is for a different amount. Capital credits are distributed on a first in, first out basis, in accordance with your cooperative’s bylaws. Payment of capital credits must also be approved by your board of trustees after reviewing your cooperative’s financial status.

This year, your board of trustees has approved the payment of capital credits for the year 1980. These capital credits will be distributed over a three-year period.

If you had service in 1980 and we still have a valid address for you, your check will automatically be mailed to you in December. For those member-owners we are unable to locate, a list has been inserted in this month’s issue of Alabama Living to provide the names of those individuals, as well as the names of those who have unclaimed capital credits for the years 1977 and 1979. Also included in this insert are instructions and forms with respect to capital credits of former members as well as deceased members. Click here to view capital credit list and forms.

Please keep in mind, however, that if a debt is owed to the cooperative by the individual eligible for a capital credit refund, the amount of the debt will be subtracted from the refund before mailing a check.

If you have any questions regarding the payment of capital credits, please contact us at the telephone numbers listed on the insert.

Capital credits – just one more benefit of being a cooperative member-owner.
